The region round Chennai was an essential administrative, army, and economic centre for a lot of centuries. The empire was at the middle of interactions between the Jap and Western worlds for six centuries.
The area came under the influence of Vijayanagara Empire in the fifteenth century CE. The coastal land which then contained the fishing village Madrasapattinam, was purchased by the British East India Firm from the Nayak ruler Chennapa Nayaka within the seventeenth century.
